What makes a short horror story work

Give the reader one rule early, like "never answer after 3 a.m.", then break it. Use quiet on purpose, because a scene with steady room tone and one sudden sound hits harder than constant noise. Let the threatening voice speak very little. A single whispered line from the second voice can carry the whole scene. Second person ("you hear it again") pulls the listener in. End before you explain the monster. An unanswered question is what makes people replay it or read the comments. Keep the artwork dim and specific, since one strange detail beats a gallery of gore.
